Chicken Cock was the speakeasy bourbon — served in tin cans at the Cotton Club through Prohibition, the Famous Old Brand since 1856 — and Tastings.com scored the revival 92. James A. Miller began distilling on a Bourbon County farm in the 1830s and built the Bourbon Distillery at Paris, Kentucky, in 1856; the brand survived imitators, the Whiskey Trust, and Prohibition before fading after World War II, until spirits entrepreneur Matti Anttila rediscovered it in 2011 and Grain & Barrel Spirits relaunched it in 2014. The Kentucky Straight Bourbon is distilled at Bardstown Bourbon Company from a 74% corn, 18% rye, 8% malted barley mash bill, aged around four years in new charred oak, and bottled at 90 proof in the honeycomb-textured replica of the Prohibition-era bottle. Men's Journal found it right in the sweet spot for sipping at 90 proof, better still in an Old Fashioned where the spice and grain meet bitters and orange. The Barrel Burner: plantain, corn, vanilla, pound cake, and banana on the nose, caramel sweetness with buttered corn, oak, and rye on a medium finish. Bourbon & Banter: a pleasant, easy drinker best savored neat. Honest note, and Breaking Bourbon says it plainly: a smooth, crowd-pleasing, standard Kentucky bourbon in a premium bottle at a premium price — you're paying for the history and the glass. For an Old Fashioned, a highball, or a gift with a story. The famous old brand, back.
