David Nicholson is one of the older names in American whiskey. It started in 1843 with a St. Louis grocer of that name, who sold the bourbon out of his general store. The Van Winkle family later made it at the A. Ph. Stitzel Distillery for the St. Louis market and held the brand until 2000, when it was bought by Luxco, now Lux Row Distillers of Bardstown, Kentucky. For most of its life it was a regional bourbon sold mainly in Missouri and Illinois, until a 2016 relaunch with new packaging took it national. The original David Nicholson 1843 is a wheated bourbon. The Reserve is its counterpart: a Kentucky straight bourbon made from a high-rye mash bill, given extra time in the barrel and bottled at 100 proof (50% ABV). Lux Row describes it as a more complex, toasted, rich bourbon with more spice than the wheated 1843. Reviewers pick up sweet cherry, baking spice and a faint floral note on the nose, cinnamon raisin bread, pecans and banana with rye pepper on the palate, and burnt brown sugar on the finish.
