Journeyman Distillery was founded in 2011 by Bill Welter inside the Featherbone Factory in Three Oaks, Michigan, a building put up in the late 1800s by E.K. Warren to make featherbone, his innovative stay for corsets, along with buggy whips. Featherbone Bourbon is the distillery's flagship, named for Warren's corset-stay invention, and it is the whiskey that built Journeyman's reputation outside Michigan. The mash bill is 70% organic corn, 25% organic wheat, and 5% organic rye, which makes it a wheated bourbon, the style known for a softer, sweeter profile than high-rye bourbons, and every grain is certified organic. It is bottled at 45% ABV (90 proof). Journeyman is a grain-to-bottle distillery, and Welter's own Indiana farm has supplied specialty grains since 2016. Featherbone has collected a long list of recognition: a Platinum medal at the 2023 ASCOT Awards, 93 points at the 2022 Melbourne International Spirits Competition, 89 points from Whisky Advocate, 90 points from the Beverage Testing Institute, a spot on Forbes' list of great bourbons distilled outside Kentucky, and Gear Patrol's "Best Bourbon Not From Kentucky." A good pick for wheated-bourbon drinkers looking beyond Kentucky, neat or in an Old Fashioned.
