Journeyman Distillery Not A King Rye Whiskey is an organic rye from Journeyman Distillery in Three Oaks, Michigan, one of the few USDA-certified organic and kosher distilleries in the country. The name is a nod to George Washington, who turned down a crown and instead became one of America's largest rye distillers at Mount Vernon, and the whiskey uses the same mash bill as Washington's distillery: 60% organic rye, 35% organic corn and 5% organic malted barley. It is bottled at 90 proof and released each year around Presidents' Day.
With a third of the mash in corn, Not A King is a rounder, softer rye than the 95% Indiana style. Thirty-One Whiskey describes classic spice and pepper with a small hint of sweetness and a rich umami note, with clove, cinnamon, black pepper, pecan and raisin, and found it turns sweeter and more bourbon-like over ice, recommending it neat, the way Washington would have had it. Journeyman's home in a restored corset factory is worth a visit if you are ever in southwest Michigan.
