Journeyman Distillery was founded in 2011 by Bill Welter inside the Featherbone Factory in Three Oaks, Michigan, a building put up in the late 1800s by E.K. Warren to make featherbone, his innovative stay for corsets, along with buggy whips. Journeyman's spirits are certified organic and kosher, and the distillery works grain to bottle. Silver Cross is its four-grain whiskey, made by single distillation from an even mash of 25% each organic rye, organic corn, organic wheat, and organic barley, and bottled at 45% ABV (90 proof). The idea is balance: rye for spice, corn for sweetness, wheat for softness, and barley for malty depth, and Journeyman says you can taste each grain's presence in the finished whiskey. The name comes from a medal awarded in the early days of the British Open golf championship, which came to stand for friendship, tradition, and spirited competition. Silver Cross has earned a Gold medal at the 2022 ASCOT Awards, a Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, 92 points from the Beverage Testing Institute, and 96 points from The Whiskey Guild. Try it neat to pick out the grains, or in a Manhattan or Old Fashioned.
