Dead Guy Whiskey comes from Rogue Ales & Spirits in Newport, Oregon, the brewery best known for Dead Guy Ale, and the whiskey is built directly from the beer: it is distilled from the same malts that go into Dead Guy Ale, a 100% malted barley mash, so the wash going into the still is essentially a stripped-down version of the ale. Rogue pot distills it at its own distillery on the Oregon coast and ages it at least two years in new white oak, which qualifies it as a straight whiskey, in the mild, damp climate of Newport's Yaquina Bay, a slow maturation compared with the hot summers of Kentucky. It is bottled at 40% ABV (80 proof). Rogue first released Dead Guy Whiskey in 2006, which makes it one of the earliest craft American malt whiskeys still in production and the most popular whiskey in Rogue's lineup. The producer describes it as fruity and bright with dark cocoa, vanilla and molasses, and the beer heritage is obvious in the glass: a pale gold color and a malty, bready character closer to a young single malt than to bourbon. Try it in a highball or an Old Fashioned.
