Tommyrotter Distillery is a small producer in Buffalo, New York, named for the Tommyrotters' Club, an early-twentieth-century circle of artisans who walked out of the Roycroft community to go their own way. This is their Napa Valley Heritance Cask Straight Bourbon, and it is honest about its sourcing: a blend of three separate straight bourbons distilled in Indiana from a four-grain mash of corn, wheat, rye and malted barley, carrying no age statement. What Tommyrotter adds is the finish. The blended bourbon spends three months in French oak barrels that previously held Heritance Cabernet Sauvignon, the Taub Family Selections wine from Rutherford in the heart of Napa Valley, before bottling at 95 proof (47.5% ABV). The wine barrels push the bourbon toward dark fruit: Breaking Bourbon's review of Batch No. 4 found raisin, black cherry and plum on the nose, plum, warm spice, vanilla, seasoned oak and burnt brown sugar on the palate, and a slightly dry finish of prune and leather with decent length. At the price it competes with other wine-finished bourbons like Angel's Envy, and it drinks best neat or in an Old Fashioned where the plum and cherry notes have room to show.
